Ex-Ghana winger Reverend Osei Kofi has rubbished claims that the old generation Black Stars whose efforts were not rewarded by successive governments had cursed the team, resulting in its failures over the years.
“We didn’t curse anybody,” he told the Commission of Inquiry probing the World Cup disaster 24 hours after pocketing outstanding Nations Cup bonuses of over three decades.
Members of the Retired Footballers Association of Ghana (RENFAG) had been accused of being the cause of Ghana’s woes, as the Black Stars have not lifted any trophy since 1982.
But the outspoken former Ghana international, on behalf of his colleagues, distanced old Black Stars players from the accusation.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports last Tuesday officially handed the gold winning groups of 1963, ’65, ’78 and ’82 Nations Cup groups with their outstanding cash of GH¢1.7m.
On how he and his colleagues reacted after receiving the money Reverend Osei Kofi said, “You should have seen how some of my colleagues, some with walking sticks, danced after receiving their cheques. Those who could have died next year, I believe will live more years.
“We are planning to go to President Mahama to thank him. We didn’t do anything for this government, but he has recognized what we did for Ghana,” he added.
Each member of the ex-Stars received GH¢180,000.
