A 47-year-old man has been barred from attending football matches across the United Kingdom following his arrest for allegedly racially abusing Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo during the Premier League season opener at Anfield.

The incident unfolded in the 29th minute of Bournemouth’s clash with Liverpool on Friday, August 15, 2025, when Semenyo alerted the referee to the abuse. Play was temporarily stopped before the match resumed.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Saturday that the suspect, a Liverpool resident whose name has not been released, was taken into custody on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been released on conditional bail, which includes a nationwide ban from regulated football fixtures and a restriction preventing him from going within one mile of any designated stadium.

Police said the case remains under investigation and that officers are collaborating closely with Liverpool Football Club.

Semenyo, a 25-year-old Ghanaian international, later reflected on the events through social media. He wrote that the evening at Anfield would “stay with me forever, not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.” He expressed gratitude to his Bournemouth teammates, Liverpool players, supporters, and Premier League officials, noting that the solidarity reinforced his love for the game.

Despite the disruption, Semenyo went on to deliver a strong performance, scoring twice in the second half as Bournemouth rallied from two goals down before ultimately falling 4-2 to Liverpool.

In a statement, the Premier League confirmed its “on-field anti-discrimination protocol” had been activated during the match and stressed that the matter “will now be fully investigated.”

The incident comes only days after Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel was targeted with racist abuse online following his penalty miss in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, highlighting ongoing concerns about racism in football.
