The 2026 Emancipation Day celebration has been launched at Assin Manso in the Central Region, beginning a programme of activities focused on the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans.
Assin Manso holds an important place in Ghana’s heritage tourism because enslaved people were taken through the area on their way to coastal forts and castles.
The community is associated with the Slave River site, where captives were made to take their final bath before continuing towards the coast.
The programme will take participants through the history and human consequences of the trade.
Emancipation Day is observed as a period of remembrance, reflection and cultural connection among Africans and people of African descent.
The Ghana celebration forms part of the country’s international heritage calendar alongside the Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival, known as PANAFEST.
Activities associated with the observance bring visitors to historic locations in the Central Region and other parts of the country.
Assin Manso’s role gives the launch both cultural and travel significance.
The event connects community history with Ghana’s broader presentation of forts, castles, routes and memorial sites linked to the transatlantic slave trade.
Organisers have placed attention on the need for host communities to prepare for visitors and the economic activity generated by heritage events.
Accommodation, transport, food, guiding and cultural performance are among the services connected with tourism activity during major commemorations.
Ghana’s Emancipation and PANAFEST programmes have contributed to the country’s profile among diaspora travellers seeking direct engagement with African history.
The events also create opportunities for traditional leaders, local authorities, cultural institutions and residents to participate in the presentation of heritage.
The launch at Assin Manso establishes the starting point for the 2026 programme.
The celebration will continue through the announced series of commemorative and cultural activities, with Assin Manso remaining one of the principal heritage locations.
