One person has been reported dead in a fire outbreak that torched the Darkuman Kokompe Spare Parts Market late Saturday evening.
The spokesperson of the Ghana National Fire Service Prince Billy Anaglatey confirmed the death to Starr News but said investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the fire that has destroyed property worth hundreds of Cedis.
The inferno started at about 10pm at the spare parts section of the popular market in Accra.
The Ghana National Fire Service had difficulties fighting the inferno due to obstructions and lack of planning to make way for easy access.
This is the second time in three years that a major fire ravaged the market that deals in auto parts.
Meanwhile, the Director of Fire Fighting Ebenezer Simpson has called on the city authorities – the Accra Metropolitan Assembly – to get rid of structures at markets and congested areas that make it very difficult for firemen to quickly respond to fire outbreaks.
He said the AMA must plan towards a fire-free society to save the millions of Cedis that is spent annually in fighting fire or replacing lost property.
The nation is already counting its loss after fire gutted the Central Medical Stores which house majority of essential medicines and other medical equipment before being conveyed to the regional hospitals.
Authorities say about Gh¢237 million has been washed down the drain in the fire that occurred last week. A Shell Service Station in Kumasi was also on fire Saturday morning.
