A brilliant 83rd-minute header from Olympique Marseille winger Andre Ayew powered Ghana to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2015.

The Black Stars outplayed South Africa in a thrilling game at the Estadio de Mongomo Tuesday, but it was the Bafana Bafana who drew the first blood in the 17th minutes courtesy a Mandla Masango strike from the edge of the box.

The scoreline remained 1-0 in favour of the Rainbow Nation until the recess. After the interval Ghana coach Avram Grant used his two remaining substitutes’ cards by bringing on Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Kwesi Appiah for Afriyie Acquah and Jordan Ayew respectively.

He had earlier brought on John Boye when Daniel Amartey got injured.

Boye equalised for Ghana in the 73rd minute with a soft but lovely curler that beat the South African shot-stopper Khuzwayo.

After dominating possession and kept probing, Ghana’s effort paid off when Ayew was reached from a cross and beautifully headed the ball to double the four-time African champions’ lead to book a quarter-finals slot for Ghana.

Algeria and Ghana have progressed from Group C.
