The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, remains the leading contender to represent the party in the 2028 general election, although his support has declined slightly, according to a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics.

The survey shows Mr Asiedu Nketia leading the race with 27% support among NDC delegates, down from 29% recorded in the April 2026 poll.

However, his closest contender, the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has gained momentum, increasing his support from 19% to 22% in the latest survey.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, recorded the biggest decline, dropping from 11% in April to 6% in July 2026.

Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s support also reduced from 8% to 7%, while former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah dropped from 8% to 5%.

Professor Joshua Alabi, Eric Opoku and other potential contenders recorded 1% each, while 30% of delegates remain undecided, an increase from 24% in the previous poll.

The survey also examined whether delegates support calls for Mr Asiedu Nketia to remain National Chairman of the party.

It found that 61% agreed that he should continue in the role, while 26% disagreed and 13% expressed no opinion.

The poll further showed growing support for calls for Dr Ato Forson to lead the NDC into the 2028 election against the New Patriotic Party’s potential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the survey, 58% of delegates agreed with the suggestion that the NDC should present Dr Forson, an economist, to contest against Dr Bawumia, who is also an economist. 23% disagreed, while 19% had no opinion.

Interestingly, the poll found that 25% of delegates who currently support Mr Asiedu Nketia also agreed that Dr Forson should represent the NDC in the next election.

In a direct contest between Mr Asiedu Nketia and Dr Forson, the two candidates were statistically tied. Mr Asiedu Nketia led with 34%, while Dr Forson had 33%, with 33% of delegates undecided. In April, Mr Asiedu Nketia led Dr Forson by 37% to 32%.

Against other possible contenders, Mr Asiedu Nketia maintained a stronger lead.

In a head-to-head matchup with Haruna Iddrisu, Mr Asiedu Nketia secured 45% support compared with Mr Iddrisu’s 16%, while 39% remained undecided. The April poll had Mr Asiedu Nketia leading 42% to 22%.

Against Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Asiedu Nketia led with 46%, compared with 15% for the former Vice-President candidate, with 39% undecided. In April, the gap was 46% to 11%.

Mr Asiedu Nketia also led Julius Debrah by 45% to 16%, with 39% undecided. The previous poll recorded a 43% to 18% lead for Mr Asiedu Nketia.

The regional breakdown showed stronger support for Dr Forson in some key electoral areas. In the swing regions of Greater Accra, Central and Western, Dr Forson led with 29%, followed by Mr Asiedu Nketia with 23%.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang recorded 8%, Julius Debrah 5%, Haruna Iddrisu 4%, while 27% of delegates were undecided.

In the Akan regions — including Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Eastern, Western and Western North — Mr Asiedu Nketia led with 27%, followed closely by Dr Forson with 25%.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang had 6%, Julius Debrah 5% and Haruna Iddrisu 3%, while 31% remained undecided.

The findings suggest that while Mr Asiedu Nketia continues to lead the early race for the NDC’s 2028 presidential nomination, Dr Forson is emerging as a strong challenger as the contest develops.
