The water crisis at the main campus of the University of Ghana, Legon, has continued unabated. Univers News recently reported that some halls of residence, including the African Union (formerly Pentagon), James Topp Nelson Yankah and Nelson Mandela. Investigations conducted in some of the traditional halls by Univers News have revealed that, they are also facing water crisis.

Our investigations revealed that the taps in Akuafo Hall Annex ‘C’ have not been flowing consistently for the past one month. According to a resident, “The tap has not been flowing on a very regular basis on campus. It has been on and off, on and off and especially now it’s not been flowing for like three weeks.

The water crisis comes in the wake of preparations by students towards the end-of-semester examinations. The situation seems to be affecting the living conditions of the students as well having toll on their finances. “It has affected my way of life, it has affected the amount of water I use on a daily base, it has affected my way of doing my laundry, it has also affected my finances because it takes me like Gh¢10 almost every week to fill my barrel”, a student lamented. Another student who also spoke to Univers News stated that, “Even washing our utensils is so hard. You always have to be moving up and down and we are close to exams so we can’t afford to be ‘wasting’ time going up and down to fetch water.

The situation has caused the students to devise other means of getting water for their daily activity. The students have therefor resorted to hiring the services of people to get fetch water for them. “I’ve asked somebody to fetch water and bring it up here to me because I’m on the fourth floor and I can’t go downstairs to carry a bucket because I’m not feeling too well” a student stated.
