MTN Ghana has stated it continues to invest in data technology to improve customer experience and broaden opportunities for Ghanaians to reap the benefits of communications technology.

The statement was made during engagements between MTN officials and senior members of the media in the Western and Central regions of Ghana.

Briefing the media at both fora, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, reiterated the fact that MTN is the only telecommunications provider in Ghana to have met the license conditions for the rollout of 3G sites in the country.

She said, “MTN has consistently adopted a strategic and systematic approach to expanding and updating the network in order to provide reliable services that are relevant to the lives of our subscribers. Starting with fewer than 900 2G sites when MTN began operations in Ghana, MTN now has over 2275 2G sites and 1090 3Gsites as well as over 4000 Km of fiber.

These investments are to empower customers to do more with voice and data; to use today’s devices to improve efficiencies, to stay in touch and to expand business opportunities. Our investments are also to support the innovations we develop so we are ready for what customers request tomorrow. ”

She also used the occasion to ask for the support of the media in combating some of the challenges that hinder implementation and affect the delivery of quality services to customers. Notable among them are frequent fibre cuts and battery thefts at MTN sites.

The fora, which form part of MTN’s regular engagements with the media, were aimed at updating journalists on recent operations, trends in telecommunications and MTN’s plans for network expansion and upgrades in the two regions and across the country. It also provided an insight into investments in social interventions.

The Regional Technical Manager for the Western and Central business district, Mr.Teddy Hayford-Acquah, also shared information on specific initiatives being undertaken to improve the data experience in the two regions. He revealed that MTN was increasing the data speeds in both the Western and Central regions to enhance the data experience. He also stated that MTN was, among other things, building a new 27-Km fiber route from Winneba Junction to Agona Swedru and at the same time planning to reconstruct the 180-Km fiber route from Apimanim to Elubo.

Hayford Acquah said, “Data is key for us and we are taking all the necessary steps to ensure that customers get value for their money.” He confirmed that there are currently 196 2G sites and 54 3G sites in the Central region and 2322G sites and 88 3G sites in the Western region.

The regional Editor’s fora provide MTN Ghana the unique opportunity to obtain direct feedback on the company’s operations from the media who are key stakeholders to MTN’s business.

The Western and Central Region engagements follow similar interactions held in Accra, Sunyani and Kumasi earlier this year. The forum will be replicated in all the remaining regions of the country.

The team from MTN also included the Ag Regional Senior Manager for the South Western Business District and the Senior Managers for both Corporate Communications and Regulatory Affairs.
